Installation Instructions

To join a BMW M50 / M52 / M54 / S50 / S52 / S54 engine with a ZF GS6-53BZ transmission, no adapter plate is needed. The two top bolt holes of the GS6-53BZ gearbox must be clearanced slightly for proper alignment – this modification does not affect the centering of the engine and transmission.

The flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft using the included bolts, torqued to 120 Nm (88.5 lb⋅ft) with threadlocker applied. The OEM starter motor is retained (BMW OE). The clutch release arm must be positioned correctly with the release bearing as shown in the diagram below.

With the PMC Motorsport flywheel, you keep the factory BMW OE starter motor from your M50 / M52 / M54 / S50 / S52 / S54 engine. The starter motor is not included in the kit.

Which clutch pressure plate fits the PMC flywheel?

A 240 mm (9.45") BMW OE type pressure plate from M57N / M57N2 / N54 / B58, e.g. BMW OE 21 21 7 620 467, 21 21 7 559 864, 21 21 7 545 068, or Sachs Performance 883082.001243. Custom clutches like ACT / Spec / Tanaci can also be used, provided the custom pressure plate matches the mounting pattern of BMW OE (M57N / M57N2 / N54 / B58).

Which clutch disc should be used?

A 240 mm clutch disc with a 32.5x35-26N spline (26 teeth) suited for GS6-53DZ / GS6-53BZ transmissions, e.g., BMW OE 21 20 7 583 172. The clutch disc is not included in the kit.

What additional parts do I need to purchase for installation?

You need a clutch pressure plate, clutch disc, release bearing with a 2-position clutch fork (BMW OE 21 51 7 564 027), and a clutch slave cylinder (BMW OE 21 52 6 775 924 / 21 52 6 785 964 / 21 52 1 158 903 / 21 52 6 766 277). These components are not included in the kit.

What is the difference between the 7.15 kg and 5.7 kg versions?

The heavier 7.15 kg flywheel has greater inertia, meaning the engine runs smoother at low RPMs, it is easier to pull away, and RPMs drop less between gear shifts – making it a great choice for a daily driver, drift cars, and long-distance driving. The lighter 5.7 kg version provides faster throttle response and allows the engine to rev more quickly, which is highly appreciated on the track. Both versions fit the same engines, gearboxes, and clutches.

Are the included instructions sufficient for complete installation?

The manual covers mating the engine to the transmission outside the vehicle. Depending on the car, extra modifications may be required (mounts, bushings, firewall, transmission tunnel, driveshaft length). We recommend installation by professional technicians.

Please note that a rigid single-mass flywheel delivers uncompromised throttle response at the expense of factory dampening elements. This results in a more direct drivetrain connection, which may naturally increase gear noise transmission from the gearbox. This is an expected and desirable characteristic in performance vehicles resulting from a solid engine-drivetrain link.
