The custom PMC Motorsport flywheel allows you to mate inline BMW M50, M52, M54 and S50, S52, S54 engines with the manual 6-speed ZF GS6-53BZ transmission used in N54-powered BMWs (E8x 135i, E9x 335i, E60 535i, Z4 35i). The flywheel is designed for racing 184 mm (7.25") POT-type multi-disc clutches. The transmission bellhousing fits these engine blocks directly, so no additional gearbox adapter plate is required – installation is virtually plug & play.

The PMC Motorsport Ultralight Race flywheel is made of aluminum and features a replaceable steel friction face. Every flywheel is inspected and balanced before shipment. It is designed for 184 mm (7.25") POT-style clutches – patterned after Tilton OT-II Cerametallic 7.25" pressure plates in twin-disc (66-312xxx) and triple-disc (66-013xxx) configurations. It also fits other clutches matching Tilton dimensions. The small clutch diameter and low mass of the system deliver instantaneous engine throttle response.

Installation Instructions

To join a BMW M50 / M52 / M54 / S50 / S52 / S54 engine with a ZF GS6-53BZ transmission, no adapter plate is needed. The two top bolt holes of the GS6-53BZ gearbox must be clearanced slightly for proper alignment – this modification does not affect the centering of the engine and transmission.

The flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft using the included bolts, and the pressure plate is secured with the provided pressure plate bolts. The OEM starter motor is retained (BMW OE). The release bearing must be positioned correctly, and the gearbox guide tube must be shortened as shown in the diagrams below.

Installation is virtually plug & play – you only need to trim/clearance the two top mounting holes on the gearbox, which does not affect engine-to-transmission centering.

Which starter motor should be used?

With the PMC Motorsport flywheel, you keep the factory BMW OE starter motor from your M50 / M52 / M54 / S50 / S52 / S54 engine, e.g., BMW OE 12 41 1 466 102, 12 41 1 712 937, 12 41 1 715 238, 12 41 1 735 524, 12 41 1 738 602, 12 41 1 738 604, 12 41 1 740 375, 12 41 1 740 378, or 12 41 2 344 247. The starter motor is not included in the kit.

Which clutch fits the PMC flywheel?

The flywheel is designed for 184 mm (7.25") POT-type clutches. Tilton OT-II Cerametallic 7.25" pressure plates served as the pattern – twin-disc 66-312xxx and triple-disc 66-013xxx. Other clutches meeting Tilton dimensions also fit. Clutch discs must be sintered, 184 mm, with a 32.5x35-26N spline (26 teeth) for the ZF GS6-53BZ transmission.

What additional parts do I need to purchase for installation?

A 184 mm POT-type clutch pressure plate and discs (e.g., Tilton OT-II), as well as a release bearing, clutch fork, and clutch slave cylinder dedicated to your gearbox. These parts are not included in the kit.

Does the gearbox require modification?

Yes. You must clearance the two top bolt holes of the GS6-53BZ gearbox and shorten the gearbox guide tube. The required modifications are shown in the graphics in the "Installation Instructions" section.

Is this flywheel suitable for a daily driver car?

No. The Ultralight Race flywheel with a 7.25" multi-disc clutch is designed for professional motorsport. For a daily driver car, we recommend flywheel versions designed for a 240 mm BMW pressure plate.

What is included in the kit?

Does the price include customs duty for shipments outside the European Union?

Are the included instructions sufficient for complete installation?

The manual covers mating the engine to the transmission outside the vehicle. Depending on the car, extra modifications may be required (mounts, bushings, firewall, transmission tunnel, driveshaft length). We recommend installation by professional technicians.

Please note that a rigid single-mass flywheel delivers uncompromised throttle response at the expense of factory dampening elements. This results in a more direct drivetrain connection, which may naturally increase gear noise transmission from the gearbox. This is an expected and desirable characteristic in performance vehicles resulting from a solid engine-drivetrain link.
