PMC Clutch – precision solutions for mechanical tuning and motorsport. Lightweight aluminum rigid flywheel with replaceable friction surface for BMW M50 M52 M54 S50 S52 S54 (petrol) M57 (M57d30 306D1 diesel) engines.

The lower inertia of a lightweight flywheel results in significantly better and faster throttle response, improving the car's acceleration. Although it does not increase engine power, it reduces drivetrain losses, resulting in slightly higher power at the wheels. Lightweight flywheels perform exceptionally well on twisty tracks, as the car regains speed lost in corners much faster.

Weight

When designing our flywheels, we pay great attention to their weight – PMC flywheels are created for both tuning enthusiasts and those building cars for motorsport, which is why choosing the right mass is so important.

Inertia vs. Acceleration

A flywheel stores kinetic energy. The heavier it is, the more energy is required to set it in motion.

  • Too light: The engine revs up instantly, which is desirable in sports, but it also drops revs just as quickly. This can make smooth gear changes difficult in daily driving.
  • Properly balanced: Allows for faster throttle response while maintaining enough energy for the engine to operate correctly after releasing the accelerator pedal.

Idle Stability

A lightweight flywheel has a lower ability to dampen engine irregularities (especially in 3- or 4-cylinder units).

  • If the weight is too low, the engine may idle unevenly, jerk, or even stall during sudden declutching (e.g., when approaching traffic lights).
  • An appropriate mass provides an "inertia buffer" that sustains crankshaft rotation between the power strokes of individual pistons.

Ease of Launch (Torque)

A heavy flywheel helps "move" the mass of the entire vehicle from a standstill.

  • With an extremely light flywheel, the driver must apply much more throttle and operate the clutch more precisely to avoid stalling the engine when taking off.
  • Correct weight selection allows the car to maintain its civilized character, enabling smooth starts on hills or in traffic jams.

  • Compatibility: PMC custom flywheels are designed to work with the BMW M57 240mm / 9.45" clutch kit, Sachs Performance 88 308 200 1243 / 883082.001243, or their replacements fitting the OE flywheel.
  • Clutch Disc: Designed for use with factory clutch discs compatible with your gearbox.
  • Replaceable friction surface: The PMC flywheel friction surface ensures durability and long-term operation. In case of wear, it is easy to disassemble, and the replacement part is available in our offer.
  • Original starter ring gear: Galvanized ring gear with hardness identical to OE flywheels, ensuring reliability and full cooperation with the OE starter motor.
  • Balancing before shipping: Every PMC flywheel is checked and precisely balanced before shipping. If you are using a used or custom clutch kit, we recommend re-balancing the entire assembly.

It is worth noting that a lightweight flywheel provides uncompromising throttle response at the cost of eliminating factory damping elements. This translates into a more direct drivetrain operation, which may result in a natural increase in the noise of the gearbox mechanisms. This is a desirable characteristic in sports vehicles, resulting from the rigid connection of the engine to the drive.
