BMW M57 – 8HP Aluminum Starter Cover for Welding
- An aluminum cover that protects the interior of the transmission housing after cutting out a space for the starter motor during an 8HP transmission swap into an M57 engine. It can be used for many gearboxes and engines.
Starter Cover for M57 - 8HP Gearbox Swap
Starter cover designed for 8HP gearbox swaps with M57 engines. The included instructions and template significantly simplify cutting the precise starter opening required for PMC adapter kits. It protects the gearbox internals from dirt, dust, and mud, making this housing essential for M57 swaps in off-road vehicles.
• Covers the starter motor head
• Prevents contaminants from entering the gearbox bellhousing
Technical Specifications:
• Material: Aluminum
• Compatibility: 8HP 70/75 gearbox, OE BMW M57 starter (1.8kW - 2.2kW)
The price includes a complete starter housing ready for assembly, along with a cutting template and instructions.
ZF 8HP Starter Cover Installation Guide
1. Preparation
- Cut the starter opening according to the provided template; clean the edges with a grinder and wire brush.
Degreasing: Clean the edges mechanically with a wire brush and acetone.
Outgassing: Heat the gearbox casting with a torch to approx. 200°C to burn off oil from the aluminum pores. Wipe away any oil that surfaces. Degrease again.
2. Welding Parameters
Recommended Method: TIG AC (alternating current).
Filler Metal: AlSi5 (4043) or AlSi12 wire.
Shielding Gas: Pure Argon.
Preheating: Heat the entire area to 150–180°C before welding to prevent cracking and ensure proper penetration into the thick casting.
3. Execution
Technique: Direct the arc primarily at the thick gearbox casting, melting it and joining it with the edge of the cover.
Welding Path: Weld in short sections to avoid housing distortion.
Cooling: Wrap in a welding blanket upon completion. Slow cooling is required to avoid thermal stress and micro-cracks at the fusion line.
